According to the Handelsblatt newspaper, the European Union is about to fine Alphabet's Google a high triple-digit million-euro amount as part of an antitrust investigation. According to the German paper, this decision is estimated to be announced before the summer break. This is the largest fine the EU has imposed for its Digital Markets Act that curbs the power of tech companies. Google favours its own services in search results; this investigation was launched in March 2025.
Thomas Regnier said that the commission wants to secure compliance instead of imposing fines. He said that we won't hesitate to move to the next steps. Google has not followed EU rules on its search product. Changes are already being made to Search under the DMA, said the company spokesperson. The EU has given enough time to resolve the concerns after a previous proposal from Google fell short.
