Meta has sent layoff emails in May to 8,000 employees, and Zuckerberg says that the employment outlook can improve if companies focus on empowering employees rather than automating all the work. This would help to create more jobs. The layoff has rolled out in three phases. US workers are getting a total of 18 weeks of severance, along with COBRA health coverage for 18 months. 7,000 staff are reassigned to new AI roles, and around 6,000 roles are being wiped out. Mark, founder of Meta, says that people should focus on personal super intelligence and AI that will create more jobs. If people become more productive, this means that companies can automate things faster, and there will be more jobs in the future.
Meta has struggled to keep pace in the AI space, and a reboot strategy is the option that Meta chooses as the company has built its SuperIntelligence lab and has spent billions on AI. The company is building a language model-scale AI and has spent $14 billion so far. Meta has done the company restructuring and is spending $145 billion on model training, data centers, and custom chips. Antropic CEO Amodei has already warned that within five years, white-collar jobs will disappear. Mark Zuckerberg's statement contrasts with CEO Dario Amodei's.
