New Mexico has taken serious action against Meta and imposed a hefty $567 million penalty. This is the second round of hearings that Meta lost in March. In the first round, Meta was fined $375 million under the COPPA US guidelines.
According to the US Children Online Privacy Protection Act, a child's privacy online should be protected, and under this act, Meta is not allowed to ask for personal details from kids under 13 years to track their activities. $425 million fine would be spent on the mental health and treatment of youngsters, and the rest of the amount will be spent over the five years on screening and prevention programs. Meta was aware of these issues that are affecting mental health among kids.
